HDPE Bottles
HDPE stands for High Density
Polyethylene, a versatile petroleum-based plastic commonly used in
creating bottles for personal care products as well as foods and
beverages.
HDPE was first discovered as the
byproduct of a failed experiment conducted by British researchers.
During WWII HDPE played a critical role enabling engineers to
insulate and coat the cables required to install radar in aircraft.
After the war it became the first plastic in the United States to
sell more than a billion pounds a year.
Today HDPE (high
density polyethylene) is the most commonly used
material for packaging personal care products such as lotions,
bodywash, shampoo and conditioner. Unlike PET products, HDPE is often
white and opaque in nature which provides products with greater UV
protection. It can also withstand temps ranging from -148
to 176 degrees Fahrenheit. HDPE is lightweight but strong,
impact resistant and flexible enough to accommodate products that
require squeezing.
HDPE is FDA approved for food, liquids
and pharmaceuticals with recycle symbol 2; and does not contain BPA
or phthalate. It is also 100% recyclable but is heavier than PET and
uses more raw materials which results in a slightly higher carbon
footprint.
